Essentially, mosaics is the process of adhering or inlaying small pieces of variously colored material on to a flat surface to form pictures or patterns or onto a 3 dimensional object in order to embellish the surface. The art form is time consuming and is a bit messy with the required grouting, but the end result is oh so pleasing!
